Ambient Atoms: a Device for Ambient Information Visualization

Sébastien Crouzy, Stan Borkowski, Sabine Coquillart · 2018

This chapter defines and presents a brief state of the art of ambient display systems. The purpose of ambient displays is to allow users keep an eye on useful but non-central information concerning their activities. Ambient devices can be an alternative to viewing information on the smartphone. Next, the chapter introduces Ambient Atoms from a user point of view, which is an extended and surface version of Ambient Orb or Holiday. Ambient Atoms can be considered as a simpler and more modest version of Infocanvas, which does not integrate a screen. The chapter then presents the hardware and software components that make up Ambient Atoms. Finally, the chapter describes the first prototype developed for the visualization of various data relating to accommodation such as the temperature of each room, the presence of people, whether doors and windows are open or closed, and electrical and gas consumption.
