In this paper we present cellular processing as an interesting approach to parallel processing. We give a short description of the cellular processing machine CEPRA--8L that uses FPGAs to evaluate the cellular algorithm. A comparison between different types of descriptions for the algorithm leads us to the newly defined language CDL. We give a short overview on the features of CDL and present as example a modified version of the Lee routing algorithm. Than we focus on the problems of synthesizing an FPGA from the CDL description. In the end we compare synthesized results with hand-- designed FPGAs. 1 Introduction Cellular processing is a computational model that is based on cellular automata. In this model each element of an array is an automaton that computes its state transition based on its own state and on the states of its neighbours. Throughout this paper we only consider orthogonal lattices although other lattices are possible. In the two dimensional case we can distinguish bet...
