Hedges in biomedical research articles

This diploma thesis deals with hedges ‒ an important category of pragmalinguistic features with various discourse functions. The thesis focuses on the use of hedges in research articles from the field of biomedical research. The theoretical part outlines the theoretical background of the concept of hedges in linguistic studies, brings together the contemporary interpretative models of hedging functions and presents various classifications of formal realizations of hedges. The practical part aims at identifying and categorizing hedging devices in the research corpus, consisting of research articles written by native speakers and Czech authors, and interprets the identified differences.
