F-0910 A simple analysis of 2D closed cellular structures

Hiroyuki Kagawa · The proceedings of the JSME annual meeting · 2001

From the viewpoint of material conservation, it is very interesting to use cellular structures consist of soft materials such as the cells in a creature for mechanical elements. The mechanical properties of open cells such as used in airplanes have been investigated by many researchers. On the other hand, those of closed cells such as plants or trepangs are not clarified sufficiently yet. In this study a 2D simple model of the closed cells has been proposed. Using the model, we analyzed mechanical behaviors of the closed cells in the cases that the shapes are quadrilateral and rhombus. From the analysis, the pressures generated within the cells and the relation between stress and strain under uniaxial loading were clarified.
