Deriving Alternative Structural Modifications Based on Qualitative Interpretation at the Conceptual Design Stage

Renate Fruchter · Computing in Civil and Building Engineering · 1993

Current computer tools provide little support in deriving alternative modifications based on qualitative structural interpretation of a conceptual design. This paper presents a behavior-based reasoning mechanism for composing task specific modification rules. The reasoning mechanism employs casual ordering analysis in conjunction with a knowledge composition technique. This reasoning mechanism has been integrated in an existing prototype system QLRS for qualitative interpretation of lateral load resisting frame structures. The purpose of the composed modification rules is to address a structural performance problem, identified by QLRS, to improve the response of a given structure.
