Mobility of nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has raised a number of research questions particularly those related to media access, handover mechanism, reliability and latency. To address challenges such as handover delays, energy efficiency and channel contention, mobility-aware media access protocols have been proposed. This paper presents the state-of-the-art in the field of MAC protocols for WSNs containing mobile nodes, with particular focus on recently proposed MAC protocols discussing their working mechanism, advantages and limitations. The paper also identifies prospective future directions in the field.
