DORMS: Design of multi-objective optimized RPL and MAC protocols for wireless sensor network applications

Al-Khateeb Anwar, Jun-Kyoung Kim · 2017

The versatility of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) greatly benefits various application scenarios. As the WSN communication subsystem efficiency directly influences the network reliability and scheduled maintenance (energy reserves), its careful tuning the MAC and network layers is of primal importance. We evaluate the WSN performance and the influence of several tuning options for two very different application domains, forest fire monitoring and industrial automation. The MAC layer is derived from the low power Asynchronous Scheduled MAC and the routing layer from the IPv6 routing protocol for low power and lossy networks (RPL). A simulation-based benchmark against WSNs employing different energy aware MAC and routing protocols is also presented.
