Impact of hello interval and link change ratio on throughput in MANETs

In Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs), link connections and disconnections occur frequently because each node moves independently and the nodes are distributed unevenly. Link breakage has a direct effect on the network performance. For this reason, many methods for fast and effective broken link detection using hello messages have been suggested. In this paper, we define a link change ratio based on the information of neighbouring nodes and investigate the relationship between the link change ratio and the hello interval in terms of total throughput. The simulation results show that the link change ratio normally increases as the hello interval increases. However, the hello intervals that maximize throughput exhibit a constant range of link change ratios, even though node mobility changes.
