Abstract This chapter describes the Spontaneous Virtual Networks architecture(SpoVNet), which eases creation and deployment of service overlays. First,we describe the requirements for supporting service overlays in today’s Inter-net. For instance, service overlays must work across heterogeneous networksand should be able to incorporate mobile and/or multi-homed users as well.Next, we describe the components of SpoVNet and how they relieve serviceoverlay programmers from several complex tasks. Finally, we illustrate theapplication of the provided SpoVNet service interface by giving an examplefor creating a service overlay for streaming videos to a group of users. Keywords: SpoVNet, overlay, network substrate, service overlays. 2.1 Introduction The Internet has become an indispensable part of daily personal and profes-sional life. It offers a growing variety of communication possibilities, e.g.,e-mail, instant messaging, web, file sharing, video and TV streaming, socialnetworks, online communities, or Internet telephony.
