AUTONOMIC MANAGEMENT OF SPEECH QUALITY BETWEEN VOIP ENDPOINTS BASED ON A MULTIAGENT SYSTEMS APPROACH

Leandro Silva Galvão de Carvalho · International Conference on Information Systems, Technology and Management · 2010

Although studies on the VoIP technology have advanced in the last two decades, some problems such as quality provision are still open. Considering a scenario consisted of two VoIP terminals, the effect of fluctuations in underlying data network conditions can be concealed if the terminals cooperate proactively adjusting its internal parameters. The aim of the thesis proposed here is to show that autonomic management, by means of multi-agent systems approach, can be used to improve the speech quality in a VoIP call between two terminals. The adoption of a multidisciplinary approach, combining the areas of Data Networks and Multiagent Systems, is justified by the dynamics of the environment (TCP/IP networks) and the distribution of information, control and expertise, since the receiver is able to measure the quality of the voice stream, but only the sender can trigger effective control actions. Finally measurements over experimental tests will be used as evaluation technique of the research hypotheses, inasmuch as there are some available tools which were developed in previous work.
