Reducing stalling events during DASH video playback in heterogeneous multi-network wireless environments

Alongside loss, video stalling is one of the major cause for remote delivered video quality degradation which directly affects use perceived quality. A common strategy to reduce stalling events used by MPEG DASH enabled clients is to reduce the bitrate and therefore the quality of the segments being downloaded. Unlike these approaches, this paper introduces an innovative alternative mechanism, the DASH-based Quality-oriented Video Delivery (DQVD) solution. DQVD employs dynamic wireless interface selection in multi-homed devices to reduce stalling events during video playback for DASH enabled clients in heterogeneous multi-network wireless environments. Real-life testing shows how by employing DQVD, improved video quality is achieved.
