Fuzzy Sets in Civil Engineering—A Tutorial

J. L. Chameau · Optimizing the resources for water management · 1990

This tutorial is an introduction to the theory of fuzzy sets and its applications in Civil Engineering, including its use within the framework of knowledge-based systems. The techniques discussed have not had a major impact on civil engineering practice yet; they represent recent technology. The tutorial contains two main parts: (1) presentation of the basic concepts and mathematical tools used in fuzzy sets theory; and (2) overview of typical applications in engineering. An increasing number of recent applications relate to the development of knowledge based systems; examples are presented in the last part of the tutorial, including systems that relate to the field of water resources.
