Abstract This chapter examines the medical applications of virtual worlds. It explains that the first healthcare applications of virtual reality (VR) started in the early 1990s and describes the three main surgery-related applications of VR. It outlines the current state of research and technology relevant to the development of VR applications in medical care and considers the clinical principles and safety issues associated with the use of virtual worlds in medicine.
