With rapid digital expansion, usage of digital meters are gaining momentum. However, analog dials are still prevalent in instrument panels due to performance purposes and user appeasement. In teleoperated vehicles and remote monitoring applications there is necessity for processing and wireless transmission of the data collected from the analog gauges. In this paper a methodology for automatic interpretation of the pointer position of the analog gauges in driver's instrument panel based on computer vision techniques is proposed. In this approach after image pre-processing the centre coordinates and radius of the gauge are extracted using circular Hough transform and then the pointer is identified using Hough transform by identifying location of peaks in the Hough accumulator space values. Finally, the angle of the pointer with respect to a reference is extracted and the position is interpreted. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
