Creating Big World Communities "The Classroom No Longer Has 4 Walls"

David Deubelbeiss · 2017

Community is a concept we all think we know well but which we find hard to describe or articulate with precision. What is a community? How do we build one? How does one join? How do we sustain one? Why is community so important, especially in education? As the world becomes smaller and flatter through the power of internet communications, we have the unprecedented opportunity of creating true communities. Space, time, social status and even language are no longer the traditional barriers. Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that creating global was Facebook's number 1 priority. He states, Progress now requires humanity coming together not just as cities or nations, but also as a community.” This presentation will be unabashedly personal and address the above questions. More importantly it will highlight some of the lessons learned through more than two decades of building online communities. Attendees will be inspired to create their own communities of purpose and practice and re-evaluate what it takes to do so.
