An introduction to using statistical techniques for classifying stone tools

I. Herbertson · Lithics: The Journal of the Lithic Studies Society · 2016

The idea for this paper arose from a discussion with students and friends about the difficulties encountered in the application of statistical techniques to the classification of artefacts, and my own conviction that provided simple rules are followed difficulties need not arise. Rather, in the same vein as Ballin (2000), I am offering this as a discussion of the basic ideas of classification and the help available from employing statistical techniques. If “ΣΧn/n” leaves you cold, don’t worry it need not. An understanding of elementary descriptive statistics is quite easy and once grasped can lead on to more advanced techniques.
