Ocular motility tracking provide quantitative evaluation and documentation of normal and abnormal ocular motility. It offers means for diagnosis and follow up of patients with ocular motility disorders such as nystagmus. It also contributes to medical education of residents, medical students and house-staff. However the dedicated equipment are typically very expensive and are only available in few academic centers. Optical flow sensors are very compact, low cost devices that are widely available as the main component of optical mice. These sensors are designed to detect direction and amplitude of mouse movement via detection of image shift of the mouse pad at a very high temporal and spatial resolution with real time reporting. Commercially available computer optical mice can be modified to be able to detect and report ocular movement when placed at close proximity to the ocular surface. The purpose of this work is to present a novel low-cost eye tracker based on a simple optical flow sensor. High resolution ocular tracking is an expensive technology that may not be affordable except in few academic institutions. Such devices are often required for diagnosis and follow up of patients with ocular movement disorders such as nystagmus. The suggested spectacle mounted device provides a low cost, compact, non-contact, wireless eye tracking capabilities that can facilitate diagnosis, and follow up of nystagmus.
