Durability is classically defined as the capacity for long term optimized materials to sustain mechanical and environmental constraints during all the anticipated life of a system. Nevertheless the idea that the integrated and continuous sensing techniques can optimize the operating conditions is now in progress. Different aspects of this evolution towards health monitoring and “operating durability” are discussed in relation with the smart materials concept. Finally, by extension, it seems interesting to introduce the smart materials based, new concept of “adaptive Durability
