Along with the global trend of population ageing, falls present a substantial public health problem among elderly people over the age of 65.The objective of this research was to develop a low-cost, portable and inertial sensors based tool for assessing falls risk in the older people. To achieve this goal, three stages of studies have were conducted. The first stage aimed to design a test protocol based on the human balance system for assessing the risk of falling. The test protocol consisted of seven main tests, i.e., I would never have been able to complete my dissertation without the guidance of my committee members, the help and support from the kind people around me, to only some of whom it is possible to give particular mention here.Firstly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor and mentor Professor Shuping Xiong for his time, ideas and the continuous support for my PhD study, and providing me with an excellent atmosphere for conducting the research.I have been very lucky to have a supervisor who took care of me like the elder brother in my life and encourage me to pursue high-quality research studies. His excellent guidance, caring, patience, and encouragement helped me to overcome many difficulties and improved my research ability.
