Access traffic characterization in data networks
Mehmet Ulema, K.M. Khalil · 2002
The paper discusses the "burstiness" phenomenon in data traffic, modeling approaches for bursty traffic, and the characteristics of the traffic generated by different classes of real-life end-user applications. The paper also provides a brief overview of the techniques and mechanisms devised for different packet-based (end-user to network) services to allow the users to choose appropriate values indicating their traffic characteristics. Finally, the paper presents a high-level discussion of how end-users, by using application traffic characteristics, may estimate the values corresponding to the traffic related service parameters.>
