Public Switched Telephone Network migration to an IP based Satellite Network: A unique application of IP telephony in remote locations
Jennifer Murray, Glenn Jackman · 2013
This project is a real life example of combining old and new technologies to more cost effectively provide telecom services. Many remote communities in Northern Canada are served via Satellite communications. The existing satellite supporting infrastructure has aged and needs to be upgraded. Satellite providers are moving to IP based platforms, and traditional voice switching systems need to evolve to support VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). This presentation illustrates an ongoing VoIP migration of 14 community end offices in Bell Aliant’s northernmost territory. Drivers, architectural changes, benefits and challenges of this project are discussed.
