This proceedings contains the papers of the participants of the First Interna¬ tionalWorkshop on Architectures for Software Systems held on April 24-25, 1995 in conjunction with the 17th International Conference on Software Engineering in Seattle, Washington. This workshop brought together researchers and prac¬ titioners interested in software architecture establish a common understanding of the state of the practice, the kinds of research and development efforts that are in progress, and the important challenges for this emerging field. Topics of specific attention included: the conceptual basis for software architecture, analysis and synthesis of architectures, selection and evaluation of architectural designs, and the engineering context within which architectural design resides.
