Recently, Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) has become an important application because of its small area wireless communication and good mobility without any infrastructures. Since the topology of MANET may change frequently due to the addition and deletion of MNs, the discovery of suitable MNs to create a route has been very difficult. Moreover, since stability and reliability of routes are fundamental features to provide good Quality of Service (QoS) in MANET, the need to quickly rediscover and re-establish a new route has become urgent. In this paper, a QoS-aware Directional Flooding protocol with consideration of Redundant Route (QDFRR), which provides the redundancy strategy if the primary route fails, is proposed. An efficient directional flooding is implemented to suppress the overhead of discovering and establishing route, and the procedure of rediscovering new routes can be eliminated with the proposed redundant strategy. The performances of QDFRR are examined. Simulation results show that the packet delivery ratio, the throughput, the end-to-end delay and the overhead can be significantly improved up to 18%, 11.5%, 17.5% and 57%, respectively, in comparison with existing solutions.
