58‐1: Invited Paper : New Developments in Video Coding towards Immersive Visual Experience
Seishi Takamura · SID Symposium Digest of Technical Papers · 2017
In 2017, video compression research celebrates its 90‐year‐long history whose incunabulum dates back to the creation of AT&T Bell‐Lab's video phone in 1927. In this paper, we first overview the ever‐advancing history of video coding technology and standardization activities as well as evolution of video signals (quality and experience). Then we review latest and near‐future evolution trends of video coding technology and video signals, particularly on 360‐degree video and light field video. Then we will focus on their massive potential when it is coupled with rapidly advancing head‐mounted display (HMD) technology. Technological requirements from bilateral aspects of video coding and display are also discussed.
