We present Project Alloy, a new mobile platform for merged‐reality experiences. We discuss three areas in developing the Alloy device. Firstly, virtual reality demands low‐latency sensing and a high‐fidelity visual experience. Secondly, immersive merged‐reality is not a solved problem and key aspects like proprioception and presence need new technologies to accelerate ecosystem adoption. Lastly, thermal limitations on mobile processors require that sensing and algorithms be accelerated in hardware. This paper presents Intel’s advances in each of these domains, while also considering Alloy’s utility in applications beyond gaming.
