What methods are most effective in the office setting for removing IUDs with missing strings? Bottom line: Narrow-type forceps (eg, Spencer Wells or alligator forceps), cervical cytology brushes, and plastic thread retrievers are all highly successful methods for removing intrauterine devices (IUDs) with missing strings. Ultrasound guidance can be used to further increase success rates of these removal Procedures, and prevent the need for hysteroscopy.
