Summary Gravity gradient data can be used to describe the earth shallow structure in more detail and study in the distribution of mineral resources when compared with the traditional gravity data more accurately. In order to recover the subsurface 3D density distributions we solve the optimization problem about the focusing inversion of gravity gradient tensor data in a space of the weighted density by the conjugate gradient algorithm. The objective function includes a misfit functional between the observed data and the predicted data and a minimum support stabilizing functional. At first, when deriving the gradient of the objective function, we take into account there are the density variables in the variable weighting matrix to obtain a more reasonable formula. Then for investigate the validity and practicability, we apply the focusing method based on the new gradient to invert gravity gradient data from Vinton salt dome, Louisiana, USA. The results show a good match to the known geologic information.
