In our technologically mad world, criminals do not hesitate to use digital devices in the execution of their crimes. Criminals use cellphones to speak to their accomplices to plan a crime, while computers are used in many cases to commit fraud, to create and distribute child pornography or to carry out other cybercrimes. However, law enforcement officers can use these devices in the investigation of crimes, to ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted for breaking the law. But who is responsible for the forensic analysis of these digital devices? SERVAMUS spoke to some of the digital examiners at the Technological Investigation Support Centre (TISC) at Detective Services Head Office in Pretoria to learn more about the challenges they face while doing their job.
