A Graph Theoretical Analysis of Seizure Initiation

Epilepsy is the most common serious disease of the central nervous system and is fundamentally a disorder of brain networks.Graph theory is a mathematical discipline dedicated to the study of networks. We constructed functional graphs for every second of recording for seizure and baseline time periods for 7 patients implanted with intracranial electrodes for the purpose of invasive electroencephalographic monitoring and analyzed the network properties of these graphs.Within each patient, different seizures were found to share similar network structures at seizure initiation, while simple statistical comparisons of basic graph metrics between focus and non-focus electrodes within the graphs failed to yield any significant differences.
