From cash to cars... developing solutions with the business sector to fight crime

Criminals' priorities include getting hold of cars and cash. It is therefore important to make it as difficult as possible for them to get their hands on either. As it is impossible for the police to be everywhere at all times, technology is increasingly used either to restrict criminals' access to cash or to catch criminals while they are driving around. Business Against Crime South Africa (BACSA)* is one of the organisations which initiate projects in which the private sector and government join hands to fight crime. Two successful projects, which have not gotten much attention, relate to mitigating risks in terms of cash management through the Secure Cash Distribution System, and the Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) project which aims to identify wanted or suspicious vehicles in an unobtrusive manner.
