Very high resolution image data are required for detailed mapping and analysis in urban environments. Their widespread availability has driven attention for urban remote sensing applications in general and slum mapping in particular. Recently the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for urban/slum mapping has become reality. We provide a brief overview of slum mapping requirements and how these two data sources and related data extraction technologies are now being developed and used. Some examples of current practice and future research and application directions are highlighted.
