An Integrated Open Framework for Mining Sensor Data Ren Jianli [email protected] Computer Science and Information Management Program School of Advanced Technologies, Asian Institute of Technology Abstract Rapid advances in wireless communication, micro-electronics, and embedded system during the past several decades have enabled the new generation of massive-scale distributed sensor networks. The technology is much appropriate to a wide range of applications thus had been recognized as one of the dominant technology trends in the coming decades. Among the others, environment monitoring and protection is perhaps the most popular application up to now. Meanwhile, data mining which had been developed for extracting or mining knowledge from large amount of data, could be exploited for decision making purpose in environment protection applications. Therefore, an open framework for seamlessly integrating sensor network and data mining technology so that both the huge amount of data generated and collected in sensor networks and the powerful knowledge discovery capability of data mining technology could be effectively and efficiently utilized for decision making purpose, is proposed in this paper. Though as a new-emerging and fast-growing area there are too many problems still remain open in sensor network, and even relatively mature data mining area, we will focus on the framework integrate various hardware and/or software products in both areas from different vendors instead of discussing specific problems in too much detail. With the aid and support of such a framework it's much easier for application developers to implement various specific environment monitoring and/or protection systems , ranging from micro air/water quality and habitat monitoring to macro flood and/or forest fire dection, bio-complexity mapping or even biological, Earth and environmental monitoring in marine, soil, and atmospheric contexts.
