Outage bottleneck for reliable mobile computation offloading: Transmission or computation?

Di Han, Bo Bob Bai, Wei Chen · 2016

Computation offloading, which can alleviate the restrictions of limited resources in mobile systems, has attracted much attention recently. Due to the uncertainty of channel fading and computation complexity of input/background tasks, both of communication and computation could cause the outage event of computation offloading, i.e., the computing and transmitting time exceeds a threshold. We propose a theoretical framework to analyze the outage bottleneck of single link computation offloading in a mobile cloud computation platform. Through theoretical analysis of the outage probability of computation offloading scheme, the outage bottleneck can be obtained. Numerical results will verify the theoretical derivation as well as illustrate that the outage bottleneck depends on the distributions of both background task and input task.
