Harprit S. Grewal · 2003

The Internet has changed from its early years where its main purposes were to send electronic emails and present web pages marked up in the hypertext markup language. The “Web” is becoming the medium of choice for consumers to do their shopping and the sellers to sell their products as it is cheap, allows easy update of information, and is available twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week. In other words, the Internet has change from “The eye-ball Web” to “The transactional Web” [1]. Web services have revolutionized the way applications communicate over the Internet. Suddenly all platforms are “same” thanks to the power of the eXtensible Markup Language (XML). With the introduction of standards such as UDDI, WSDL, and SOAP more and more companies are trying to conduct business using the web services. Agents can supplement the use of web services by providing services that would otherwise be considered time-consuming or mundane. This article presents the use of agents to enhance the power of web services.
