Minimizing energy consumption in IPv6 for Small Objects Network

SmObnet6 (Small Objects Network with IPv6) is a generic term that we use to define all networks, from small such as PANs to larger, interconnecting small objects. The common point between these networks is that they will use the IPv6 protocol for communication between objects to collect and exchange data within the existing internet infrastructure. However, IPv6 routing information is communicated to IPv6 nodes by Router Advertisements (RA) messages. These messages are too frequent; they can severely impact energy consumption on battery-powered nodes. This is the reason why several researches are being conducted nowadays on how to minimize energy consumption in such networks. For this purpose, we propose a method to minimize energy consumption within SmObNet6 according to some IPv6 parameters like Router Advertisement interval maintaining connectivity between the mobile node and its default router. The results obtained from several simulations show that IPv6 with maximized RA interval consumes less than MIPv6 in terms of energy. The mechanism is validated and implemented using the simulator OMNET++ and the results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.
