Evaluating the effectiveness of a one handed gesture based control to manoeuvre an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) via a 10 DOF sensor
Alexander Tran · 2016
Gesture based commands are becoming commonplace as technology rapidly evolves.nSimilarly, as drone technology continues to develop, more simplistic and accessible use isnsought after. An amalgamation of the two concepts yields the premise behind this thesis:nevaluating the effectiveness of one-handed gesture based control in manoeuvring an unmannednaerial vehicle (UAV) via a 10DOF sensor.By manipulating the rotational inputs of the 10DOF sensor, gestures can be used tonreplicate of the signal used to manoeuvre drones. The primary method of gesture input was vianthe accelerometer and magnetometer, which together computed the pitch, yaw, and roll of thensensor. Thresholds for the pitch and roll, as well as the acceleration on the z- axis, werenimplemented, and gestures based on these elements were created. The gestures were thennassigned predetermined tasks to send PPM signals to a quadcopter to execute the commands.nSuccess was achieved in software validation, but not in physical validation, due to concernsnabout instability.n
