Visual Scheming: Assessing Visual Arguments

Ian J. Dove · Argumentation and Advocacy · 2016

It is one thing to allow for the possibility of visual argument; it is quite another to show how to identify and assess them when encountered. This paper uses argumentation schemes based upon those given by Walton, Reed, and Macagno (2008) to assess visual arguments. Insofar as argumentation schemes have become a common method of argument assessment, one would expect schemes to be applicable. In the course of applying the schemes, this paper covers a working definition of visual argument, the applicability of some schemes to some visual arguments, and the construction of new schemes for visual purposes.
