iBuck: Reliable and secured image processing middleware for OpenStack Swift

Jannatun Noor, A. B. M. Alim Al Islam · 2017

In this paper, we sketch a new methodology of expanding cloud file sharing capabilities from only storing images to also performing resizing along with encryption and analytics. We propose to do it through moving and executing user-defined programs near the data inside an object storage cloud, which is significantly different from traditional public clouds having well-known security vulnerabilities. As arbitrary separation of storage and computation increases latency and decreases performance for cloud file sharing, our approach is to package application requirement and move data after processing them based on the requirements, rather than moving data first and then process them where the application is located. Here, first, resizing images is done according to several dimensions for covering diversified remote devices. Then, encoding of images is done using the P-Fibonacci transform of Discrete Cosine Coefficients PFCC algorithm. Afterwards, images are resized to both JPEG and PJPEG types of images for faster and smooth use through adding a new middleware named iBuck. Furthermore, detailed experimentation have been carried out to evaluate performance of the middleware service on cloud file sharing environment.
