Mathematical Olympiad Competitions in the People's Republic of China

A delegation of mathematics teachers sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) made a study visit to the People's Republic of China 21 October-6 November 1977.* During that visit the delegation learned of Chinese plans to initiate national mathematical olympiad competitions and university admissions tests. The nature and content of these competitions seem to be assuming considerable importance in China.
