Navigation Signal Processing with FPGAs
Jonathan R. Hill · Proceedings of the 2004 National Technical Meeting of The Institute of Navigation · 2004
The availability of low cost field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) provides a new paradigm for implementing high performance discrete time signal processing (DTSP) techniques for navigation signals. Normally when we consider discrete time signals, one thinks of digital signal processing (DSP) devices. In retrospect however, only four operations are normally required for DTSP, namely addition, subtraction, multiplication by a constant, and delay. Each such operation is mapped to a hardware resource in an FPGA and performed in concurrent fashion. The examples of a digital counter oscillator (DCO), low pass filter, and a phase lock loop illustrate this new signal processing paradigm.
