While cars run on gasoline , computer programs run on data. They really can’t do much without it. Whereas the pumps at the gas station provide the driver with a simple, uniform approach to selecting one from a handful of fuel types, getting data in and out of computer programs has consumed the time and energy of millions of computer programmers struggling to understand the thousands of interfaces to the hundreds of types of data stores available.
