Getting around the Windows Desktop

Rob Tidrow, Jim Boyce, Jeffrey R. Shapiro · 2017

This chapter discusses the Windows 10 desktop and covers the Start menu. It points out the name and purpose of many elements that can be seen on the screen. Together, these bits of information provide basic knowledge about how they use a computer to get things done. It all starts with logging in. The desktop can have any number of icons on it. Jump lists were a new feature of Windows 7 that enhance the usefulness of the icons and pin items on the taskbar. Windows 10 continues to use Jump Lists. To conserve space on the taskbar, Windows 10 gives the option of hiding inactive icons. When inactive icons are hidden, user sees a button with up and down arrows on it at the left side of the notification area. As with any icon or button, they can point to an icon in the notification area to see the name of that icon.
