In this thesis, the applications of a new segmentation method, Constrained Deformable Contour Method (CDCM), to a sequence of two dimensional medical images for the purpose of extracting a three dimensional surface are performed.By evaluating the results quantitatively and qualitatively we examined the applicability and validation of the proposed method in several medical applications of abdominal fat, brain hippocampus and sub-brain structures of putamen, thalamus and caudate nucleus.First to my committee.Dr. Wee has been a great advisor, providing direction and support in my three years at University of Cincinnati. His enthusiasm and good sense of humor added my learning experience.Dr. Han gave extensive feedback on draft, catching subtle problems I never would have spotted. His patience and expertise make my thesis possible.Dr. Bhatnagar gave much-needed comments and suggestions, providing a more comprehensive perspective of my research.I also need to thank my committee as whole for their patience and tolerance with long distance draft feedback. To my colleagues in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision Lab.Lei He helped me out with so many trivial but essential things such as showing the initial steps of doing applications of medical image segmentation.Xun Wang was always available for my doubts in theories of Deformable Contour.Zhigang Peng gave me many good suggestions in my programming.I would also like to thank all my friends at University of Cincinnati who made my stay here so enjoyable and memorable.I would like to thank my family
