Ambiguity in patent vocabulary: Experiments with clarity scores for claims and descriptions

Jens Bertram, Thomas Mandl · 2017

The ambiguity of query terms is a major obstacle for performance in information retrieval. Clarity or ambiguity scores measure how often terms appear together with different other terms by applying the Kullback-Leibler Divergence. These scores have been used to predict the performance of queries. We calculated the clarity scores within a large patent collection and compared the ambiguity of terms selected form claims and description within the same and within the other field.
