Microcomputer applications in the health and social service sectors of developing countries

This article examines the scope and limitations of microcomputers for use in health planning, data collection and delivery services in developing countries. Examples are given of computer use for health data analysis in Columbia, for district–level health services in Malaysia, for integrated rural health care in Chad, and as aids in field surveys in Saudi Arabia. An evaluation framework is also presented for understanding the application of new technology in the health and related social sectors.
