Adaptation layer towards integration of ZigBee and IP stacks

A middleware is needed to glue differently networked devices of different software and protocols. It is lot of advantageous to the users if the resource of one device, considered superior or otherwise, is shared with other device. Resource sharing among different types of devices is not feasible with the existing architecture and hence the research work is required to realize this. As Internet is prevalent and used everywhere, there may be a plenty of advantages by the integration of the WSN and the IP to realize the WPAN. Some of the major issues to be addressed in the integration are Large header overhead, Address schemes, Limited bandwidth, Limited node energy, Large memory requirements for TCP/IP, etc., WSN and IP networks are chosen to implement the proposed concepts. ZigBee protocol is chosen to implement in WSN. A new layer called adaptation layer is proposed to include above the network layer of the ZigBee stack. The network layer of ZigBee stack is modified to include the RIP protocol in place of the AODV and the MAC layer is modified to include the CSMA protocol in place of the SMAC based on the research work [15]. The results of memory of overall stack are also published here.
