Chaos and musical instruments
Vincent Gibiat · 2007
Musical instruments as woodwinds or bowed strings have been early included in the field of Non Linear Dynamical Systems (NLDS) and are known to be able to produce various scenarios of transition from steady state to chaos. We present a review of these peculiar behaviours, through examples coming both from experimental laboratory situations and sounds coming from real musical experience. These examples cover the whole range of the two main scenarios (period doubling cascade and quasiperiodicity) and can be extended to transients..
