Survey of Concepts for QoS improvements via SDN

Considering the current state of the Internet, the available approaches to providing Quality of Service (QoS) for single services or specific tenants are limited and inflexible. Providers need a better solution that is scalable and that allows fine-grained tuning of network trac. Recently, different SDN enabled QoS frameworks have emerged, oering a lot of possibilities for network reconfiguration and high level definition of policies. This paper gives a detailed summary of available QoS mechanisms that rely on SDN and compares their strengths and weaknesses. In the spirit of the survey, novel ideas for the future of QoS are discussed. SDN brings a lot of freedom and monitoring possibilities as a QoS domain, but the Internet has yet to adapt to this innovative concept: at the time of writing most of the existing solutions are prototypes.
