From IoT to WoT
Stefan Radomski · 2017
Interaction within pervasive environments is still, predominantly, characterized by isolated applications constrained to the ecosystem of a consortium or even only a single vendor. When we regard the success of standardized markup languages, such as HTML and related technologies, to transform the Internet onto the World Wide Web, the question arises whether a similar transformation for the interaction with smart objects in a pervasive environment can be duplicated. While first attempts at reference architectures and declarative descriptions for interaction in general predate even the Internet, their applicability for interfaces in the scope of smart objects in a pervasive environment gained new momentum with recent W3C recommendations of their working group for multimodal interaction and subsequent ambitions to develop standards for the Web of Things. If we are to ever commoditize smart objects and realize the vision of Mark Weiser, common conceptualizations, interoperable implementations and standardized interfaces with a sufficient momentum to gain industrial support will need to be developed.
