Course description and objectivesThis Chinese course is, as the title indicates, an advanced course designed for students who already have knowledge of basic Chinese learned either through taking Intermediate Chinese or through some other relevant experience.The purpose of this course is to facilitate oral practice, allow students to communicate in real-life situations, and have the basic translation skills.The course will cover a wide range of materials, in terms of vocabulary, grammar, listening and writing skills.Students will learn to read and write Chinese texts with minimal help and will learn to translate texts (English to Chinese and Chinese to English) without the aid of pinyin.This advanced course will enable students to be proficient in Chinese for travel and business.Additionally, the course will integrate Chinese culture into language learning to enhance the understanding of cultural influence on the language. Required TextbookYao, Tao-chung, Yehua Liu and et al. 2002.Integrated Chinese, Level II.2005.The textbook includes a workbook and CD.Supplementary Material: (i) Chinese videos with English subtitles to familiarize students with language and culture of China, to improve oral comprehension in an entertaining format: Chinese New Year Performance, Dining in Chinese restaurant, Chinese Oral Party, Phone Conversations, Visiting Chinese Family (ii) Suitable extra pedagogical material provided by instructor.(iii) Helpful Internet
